A steep encounter: Uragala

Image
Uragala is a very interesting and somewhat challenging climb. It is a range in the famous Hanthana mountain range and this was our first time going there now that the usual Hanthana route seemed somewhat familiar. The climb is really nice and I can say this because we couldn't even get to the top. Rain stopped us and made us choose the peak or our lives, and we as rational individuals chose the peak and then thought to give our lives another chance. Enjoy! We started off in two cars and went to Sarasavigama. After stopping at the Royal mall to... eat, we were off on our way again with Google maps helping us get to Sarasavigama. We then asked the directions to go to Katusu konda (which is also a range in Hanthana). We ended up in a questionable dirt road and made our way up and ended up at a hindu temple as we were told we would. We were advised to leave the cars there because apparently to ride further up we'd need a jeep. However the path after turned out to not be so challen...

Opportunities : Germany gives you FREE EDUCATION

Image
Everyone can study in Germany, tuition-FREE! This statement makes absolutely no sense to me and why is a good question here. It's very skeptical, but after talking to a friend of mine who is currently enjoying the luxuries of free education in Germany and researching the topic myself, I am quite pleased to say that it is true first of all and secondly that,  it is one of the most perfect opportunities for anyone looking to apply for university.  So read on. Almost anywhere in Europe and the world, universities charge tuition fees - at times only from foreigners who come to their country for their studies. Germany is one of the few countries in Europe where you can study completely for free, wherever you may be from in the world. This applies to almost all study programmes at public universities.  Here's the whole reason behind it;  Germans generally believe that education should not be treated as a commercial product, and that free access to higher education ensures ...

Opportunities : Software Engineering

Image
Software engineering is a branch of computer science which includes the development and building of computer systems software and applications software. The software engineer is typically the person who helps develop the ways that the software functions by working with designers, coders and programmers to create functioning programs or add new features to existing software.   Payscale  states that the average annual base salary of a software engineer in Sri-Lanka is about 1,000,000 LKR and if this sounds like an interesting career path for you and you would like to know more about how my friend escaped A/Ls and has a degree in software engineering (already at 20), read on. The start: So Malith, having done his O/Ls in 2016 was contemplating the idea of doing A/Ls or applying for an IT degree at a private University. He was convinced that the A/L pathway might be more time consuming and along with his encouraging and supportive parents, they proceeded to branch out and understa...

Why you shouldn't do GCE A/Ls

Image
Advanced levels. Traditional, easy, straight-forward and possibly the path most followed. But it can also be a dead end. Before I go rambling on about how A/Ls can delay your life I want to say that these are purely my thoughts and I am just sharing my experiences here. I'm simply providing insight for people who might think that A/Ls is the only way for a successful future so that they can think again for themselves and make a better informed decision about whether it is the right choice or not. If you do have any thoughts or queries on this topic feel free to leave them in the comments section below. On with the rambling now: You do not HAVE to do A/Ls. You can, but you don't HAVE to. This was an idea I picked up on recently. I didn't really have any thoughts going on to do A/Ls myself because I was interested in doing medicine and knew only the traditional path of getting my degree (which I found out that there were not so traditional and faster pathways of doing this la...

A journey to the forbidden: Ritigala strict nature reserve

Image
Ritigala Strict Nature Reserve is located in the Anuradhapura district of the North central province. It is one of the few high altitude forests, encompassing  an area of 1,528.1 hectares and was declared a Strict Natural Reserve in 1941.  These areas are mainly declared for the purpose of research and for preservation and protection of large, unspoiled areas of wilderness.  Since it is home to species which are rare and possibly extinct from the region, and also because its isolation provides ideal conditions for the evolution of species, the conservation of such ecosystem is considered extremely important. Enough technicality, more about the trip. The hired bus proved very useful to sing in our sweet tones and be loud both the way there and the ride back. We were surprisingly on time and left at 5 in the morning. We took the Dambulla route as we had breakfast planned at  Benthota bake house  which had fantastic food and great service. It started rain...

It's okay to not STICK to your New Years resolution

New Years. A time for resolutions, commitments and chances of thinking to better yourself. Somewhere down the road it might go down the drain leaving you stuck watching Netflix on the couch 24/7, but never fear. It does happen to the best of us. I don't like making my New Years resolution a big thing. I feel like it adds too much pressure when I'm just trying to apply myself productively or learn something new. Taking that pressure out and simply just agreeing to do 3 sessions at the gym every week feels more freeing. It feels like you shouldn't eat your own head if you don't meet the criteria. But more, it helps you get back on track, if you miss a week or two even if you just felt too lazy. The key point I'm trying to make is, don't make it easier on yourself to quit your plans entirely because believe it or not, just because you could only go once this week does not mean all hope is lost. If anything it makes you stronger and more determined to get back int...

Do we value things less when they're in our possession

Something you've always wanted, lays by your side now. A relationship you thought you'd never find is possibly happy and healthy. The bed you sleep on every night, what if i told you is going to taken away now? I've been thinking about value recently but more specifically about losing it. How we over value things we don't own, how we take for granted the things we do, and how value is perceived differently by everyone. I fell down this psychology rabbit hole, said hello to the mad hatter and climbed back out and here's what i've come to know. The first thing i understood (and was very relieved to find out) is that, it's definitely not just you . I'm a person who questioned myself thoroughly about why i don't value things as much as i did when i didn't have them in my life. But the fact is, it's basic human nature. Adaptation. Meaning i've lived with it enough in my life that it has just become an everyday thing now. And the reason you v...
