The psychology of purpose

Image
The importance of having a purpose Purpose is an intention or objective a person has to initiate or continue something they're working on which will lead to a sense of achievement or accomplishment. It's a reason for us to get out of bed in the morning and something for us to pursue or build which can benefit us in the long term.  I've been having a sense of inadequacy these days and a feeling that I'm wasting time. My days consist of endless social media scrolls and sleep, both which I do in bed. It feels extremely unproductive and I hate it when lying down all day doesn't feel too good. The gym closed down because of the corona situation so my exercise routine is shattered and so I started looking into the psychology of the concept of purpose and why when I'm working all I want to do is procrastinate but long terms of procrastination still doesn't feel great.  As humans our primary objective from ancient times have been to gather food, provide shelter and ...

Self-help: The motivation myth

I came across a really interesting video Ali Abdaal made in his book club series, where he talks about the book "The motivation myth" by Jeff Haden. It is a really insightful video on the book, which discusses how our idea of motivation, although socially accepted is actually pretty twisted and how motivation is actually a myth. If you want to check out the video and learn why it was so inspiring I'd highly recommend  you see it for yourself.  Ali Abdaaal: Why motivation is a myth Ali talks about the book in three stages. Firstly, he talks about how motivation is not the "spark" (ergo: a myth). Secondly he goes onto talk about how success depends on the process and lastly he talks about why you should try to be a jack of all trades. The idea that motivation is a myth, Jeff Haden tries to sell is that most of us are all under the impression that to do something, you NEED motivation. And what Jeff Haden argues is actually, no, motivation is just a byproduct of pro...

Procrastination. As much as we love to kick our feet up in the air and avoid getting any work done, sometime or other you'll feel that that was a total waste of time. Delaying or postponing these tasks you know you should get done is really easy nowadays too where there's so many other things you can and would rather do. However, procrastination is nothing new and all of us have just fallen victim. Greek philosophers even had a word for it, "Akrasia" meaning "The state of acting against one's better judgement". Better judgement means choosing to do something you know will be of value to you in the long term over a mindless quick task for a present reward.  Now let's see the tips and tricks i've come across to avoid procrastinating to some extent and get more things done. The 2 minute rule This is a rule mentioned in David Allens book "Getting things done" where he says, if a task takes less than 2 minutes to do, you should just do it wi...

A message to an aspiring writer

I recently came across a very interesting podcast named "Not Overthinking" by Ali Abdaal and Taimur Abdaal. Ali has a very interesting Youtube channel as well which you can find under the name Ali Abdaal. His channel is mostly based on productivity and getting things done which if sounds like something you'd be interested in definitely check it out. If you're a student you'll find his earlier content extremely useful as he talks about the effective ways of studying which truly shocked me the first time i came across it.  Their 81st weekly podcast episode is what particularly spoke to me which was titled "Austin Kleon on writing, creativity and the importance of idleness". The episode is 2 hours and 3 minutes and i will leave a link for anyone interested in checking it out. https://podcasts.apple.com/lk/podcast/not-overthinking/id1456538451?i=1000497800678 Austin Kleon is a New York times bestselling author of five books, Show your work, Keep going, Stea...
