The importance of perspective and curious learning
The latest episode of On Purpose with Jay Shetty, which is the number one health podcast in the world is an interesting one with special guest Katherine MacNamara. Katherine Grace MacNamara is an American actress who is best known for her role in the teen drama "Shadow hunters" which aired from 2016 to 2019. She was the people's choice female TV star for the year 2018 and was recently cast in the TV series "Arrow" and plays the role of Mia Smoak. She is also cast in the Stephen king mini series "The stand" at the time. She is a very charitable person who in 2017 produced her song "Glass slipper" and donated all the proceedings to the United Nations Girl up program which is incredible. She also raised over 2 million dollars for the Children's mercy hospital in Kansas city (where she grew up) with Selena Gomez. The most surprising for me was when Jay asked her how she managed to graduate high-school at 14 and get a degree in economics by the time she was 17. Her approach to education and learning is fascinating i thought i'd write about it along with the other insightful topics they talked about in the podcast.

Jay and Katherine talked about some very interesting topics such as education and learning as well as something called "Job crafting" which is extremely interesting. They also talked about her job as an actress and the roles they play and her preparation for them.
Katherine claims she's a bit of a nerd and her curiosity for learning was fostered since she was in pre-school by her teacher there. She says she had never viewed learning or education in the negative boring way most kids tend to perceive it. Instead she was focused on the curious joyful side of education which made her schooling experience a much more productive and enjoyable one. I'd say it served her well to graduate high-school at 14 and get her degree at 17 which is just mind blowing. She agrees that school can be difficult and unenjoyable with assignments and exams and all but she uses a very beautiful phrase, "You have to Mary Poppins it a little bit" meaning you have to make it enjoyable sometimes even when it's not which i found very nice and very true. They go onto talk about the power of perspective which i've thought a bit about myself and their thoughts helped me deepen my understanding. Jay talked about a study done by Yale where they went to a hospital and spoke to the cleaners and nurses there asking them to describe their job. When they were talking to the cleaners, half of them described their jobs as low-skilled, dirty, a chore, hard or very difficult. The interesting part is the other half described it completely different and described themselves as healers, transformers, that they felt like they were building relationships with patients. What this study clearly depicts is the importance of perspective. Like the way you view things is what it becomes and that life is all abput perspective. Yale called this "Job crafting". Katherine shares this view as she says when you wake up in the morning regardless of what happens, it's a choice to decide if you're going to have a great day or a terrible day. I think this couldn't be more true because once you've got your head right at the start of the day when you get out of bed, regardless what happens if you've convinced yourself the day is going to be good, it is going to be. Not necessarily in the sense that everything might go your way but more in a sense that you wouldn't let anything get you down and will always look for the positive side of things making you a stubborn optimist who Katherine claims to be. She leads a very busy and hectic life and how she copes with a bad day is she says she finds something good in it or laughs at the chaos like how chaotic is this. She says it's either laugh or cry at that point and she'd choose laughter always.
They also talked about a charity organisation called WE that they both take part in and i thought it'd be very well worth mentioning it because it's such a worthy cause with 25 years of impact.
An interesting 34 minute conversation among Jay and Katherine awaits anyone looking to gain further insight about what i wrote on. I hope you find something valuable.
