Opportunities: A pathway to network engineering

Image
A network engineer is a technology professional who is highly skilled in maintaining the connectivity of networks in terms of data, calls, videos and wireless network services. The fundamental goal of a network engineer is to provide maximum network infrastructure, security and performance to the end users. A network engineer is required to have the necessary skills to plan, implement and oversee these computer networks. It is a very promising career which Payscale  concludes generates about an average annual base salary of 700,000 LKR in Sri-Lanka. It is a field that has even more opportunity abroad. Plus it seems it has a higher chance of obtaining PR. Manishka is someone who took the path less travelled and proceeded to pursue his dreams of becoming a network engineer after doing his London O/Ls. Realising that A/Ls just weren't for him, he researched his way into, in his opinion the best possible way forward to learn network engineering. He enrolled in the Esoft HND in computi

The brain: an Introduction

Image
The brain is one of the most sophisticated and intricate organs of your body. The way everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, you think, you smell, you hear, you see is all processed and presented to your being, in a way you can understand and bring out an appropriate response is simply amazing. The centre of all senses, the soft mass of tissues and nerves that make you understand things if you will, is of 3 main parts. Cerebrum Cerebellum Medulla oblongata The cerebrum is the main part of your brain where signals from different organs of sense such as taste, sight, sound, touch and smell are delivered to. The cerebrum has 4 lobes called Frontal which is your forehead area, Parietal which is behind that, Occipital which is at the back of your head and Temporal which is just above your ears that carry out different functions but all of them contribute to process information and make sense of it to you.  The cerebellum is the smaller mass of soft tissue and nerves at the back of your head un

The psychology of purpose

Image
The importance of having a purpose Purpose is an intention or objective a person has to initiate or continue something they're working on which will lead to a sense of achievement or accomplishment. It's a reason for us to get out of bed in the morning and something for us to pursue or build which can benefit us in the long term.  I've been having a sense of inadequacy these days and a feeling that I'm wasting time. My days consist of endless social media scrolls and sleep, both which I do in bed. It feels extremely unproductive and I hate it when lying down all day doesn't feel too good. The gym closed down because of the corona situation so my exercise routine is shattered and so I started looking into the psychology of the concept of purpose and why when I'm working all I want to do is procrastinate but long terms of procrastination still doesn't feel great.  As humans our primary objective from ancient times have been to gather food, provide shelter and

Feeling like you're worthless

I've been feeling very worthless lately. I recently got a cold (not corona thankfully) and was stuck in bed resting. Before that I was going to the gym and that kept me occupied but being sick and in bed, thats when the feeling really started to sink in. I did my advanced levels back in October 2020 and have been awaiting results ever since. It was supposed to be the end of March 2021 but then they said end of April so it should be soon when we get them. Theres a lot riding on those results so thats sort of overwhelming sometimes and just waiting around doesn't exactly feel productive. I couldn't post anything on youtube in like a month because I just wasn't feeling upto it. Putting yourself out there is still very very new to me too and that holds me back from posting or just showing my face on camera much which is bad. Its my vlog and without a bit of context it just doesn't make sense. But I am getting better at it. I watched Peter Mckinnons How to vlog with no

I started a Youtube channel

I started a Youtube channel like I've been meaning to for a long time now and it's been pretty great learning how to video edit and actually publish a YouTube video. I'm 3 videos in now and it still feels pretty terrifying to hit publish on a video. I guess sub consciously I actually care how well a video does but I really try to avoid the analytics because this is still very much a learning experience. But for what its worth it has been immense fun vlogging with my friends and with that I actually have to spend more time with my friends which is just golden. The goal is to just post vlogs, having them made the way I want them.  Uniqueness is an issue with me somewhat right now. My third vlog came out really not the way I wanted it to and that kinda made me question what kind of content I do want to make. I consume a lot of David Dobrik content on Youtube and he's basically my ideal vlogger. What I try to create is a lot of the same type of content but obviously with m

Zip-lining in Ella and amazing views!

Image
That's at Little Adam's peak in Ella. But before that about the trip: It was a two day trip. We left for Ella on Thursday around noon and about three hours later found ourselves in Mount heaven for lunch. They had heart shaped papadam. Is that a norm now?!  Papa had a conference in Badulla at 4 (the whole reason for the trip) so we gobbled up food and raced to the conference hall to find that we were earlier than everyone else even when we were late so that was fun. There was nothing for us to do so we climbed a roof (basically trespassing) and got caught by a nice person who let us off the hook. We hit the conference hall and half an hour later ate and headed back to the Ella gap panorama hotel to spend the night. After a hearty barbecue and figuring out how the hot water works, we watched Catch me if you can and three of us slept in two double beds. spacious yes.  Day two started with a beautiful sunrise view from the balcony and a coffee that needed a lot more sugar packets

Opportunities: A faster road to become an engineer

Image
Civil engineering is an engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including public works such as roads, bridges, canals, airports, structures of buildings etc. It is a highly respected profession and an intricate and interesting subject for those who chose the stream. It's no coincidence that it is one of the two professions that every parent aspires their child to be in Sri-Lanka because the respect and admiration that follow is not something you find so common. I talked to my friend who is on the road to become a civil engineer and how he applied with his O/L results. Here’s his story. Isitha Uvishka having done his O/Ls in 2016, started working on his A/Ls having chosen the maths stream. A year into it after realising that A/Ls just weren't for him and figuring it's not too late, he began searching for options and opportunities. He was fortunate to have a relative studying in China,
